The Risks of Addiction
Addiction is a complex disease that can come with a variety of risks. The health risks can vary depending on the specific substance, but many forms of addiction can cause depression and anxiety.
Addiction can also cause a person to develop a tolerance to the substance that they are taking. Tolerance can dull the effects of a substance, so people who struggle with addiction often have to increase their dosage to get the high that they want.
However, the amount that they take may be more than their bodies can safely handle. This can cause them to overdose and can be life-threatening in some cases.
There are also legal risks that come with addiction. While some substances like alcohol and marijuana may be legal in some cases, drugs like meth, cocaine, and illicitly-manufactured fentanyl are illegal to possess, manufacture, or distribute.
People who are addicted to prescription medication may also engage in ‘doctor shopping.’ This is when they go from one doctor to another in hopes of getting more prescriptions. This is against the law in California.
The influence of substances can also impair a person’s judgment and make them more liable to commit harmful acts. Because of this, some people may commit reckless or illegal actions when they are drunk or high, which can endanger themselves or others.
