Characteristics of Addiction
Addiction is a behavioral health disease, and like any other disease, it can come with several symptoms. One major symptom of addiction is that people who use substances lose control. Many are unable to stop or reduce their substance use because their minds and bodies have become so dependent on them.
People who are affected by addiction will often use substances even if they suffer adverse consequences as a result of drug and alcohol use.
Another characteristic is that people may prioritize their substance use over everything else. They may neglect work or school because they’d rather spend their time using drugs or alcohol. They may even prioritize it over their relationships and withdraw from family and friends.
Many people who become addicted to substances also lose interest in things that once brought them, so they may stop engaging in their usual hobbies.
