Therapy in Addiction Treatment
Therapy is one of the most important parts of drug and alcohol recovery, and it will be important in both inpatient and outpatient treatment.
Individual therapy can help a person address the underlying causes of their substance use. It can also be a safe space for them to develop healthy coping mechanisms so they can prevent themselves from relapsing once they leave a treatment facility.
Group therapy can also be an essential part of a person’s treatment program. Struggling with addiction can make a person isolated and lonely. This can be because of the influence of drugs or alcohol or because they ignore maintaining their relationships in favor of using substances.
It can also be part of the detoxification process. If a person chooses to detox outside of a treatment facility, then they can continue to see a counselor or a support group to help meet their sobriety goals and manage withdrawal symptoms.
For similar reasons, it can also be part of outpatient treatment services. Many people who are recovering from alcohol and drug abuse will need to maintain their sobriety. Referrals to counselors are often part of the aftercare treatment that many rehabs offer.
