How to Find a Support System
A support network can be an important part of a person’s recovery from substance use. Alcohol and drug rehab centers know this, and this is why they include group therapy sessions in their treatment programs.
However, when a person leaves an inpatient treatment center, they are essentially on their own. They’ll no longer have access to the community they had in inpatient treatment.
Recovery centers are also aware of this, so part of their aftercare options include local support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. These groups are also often part of a person’s outpatient treatment.
Another way to find a support group outside of residential treatment is to enter a sober living program. In a sober living home, residents follow the rules, live with a measure of independence, and participate in activities meant to further their drug and alcohol recovery.
Family and friends can also be a part of a person’s social support group. This is why rehabilitation centers have family therapy as part of a person’s substance abuse treatment. This can help loved ones be active participants in addiction recovery.
