What is Neurofeedback ?

Neurofeedback therapy is a treatment modality which aims to teach the participant how to regulate their own central nervous system in order to reduce anxiety and panic and improve overall mood independently.

At Luxe, our neurofeedback therapist works with you over several sessions to guide you in the process of independent soothing of your central nervous system.

How does Neurofeedback Therapy work?

It is important to understand the various mechanisms tied to mood regulation and deregulation in order to understand what makes neurofeedback therapy effective.

  • The cells in your brain, neurons, make up networks which generate various brainwaves. Some of these brainwaves with which you may be familiar include delta waves (associated with sleep), alpha waves (associated with calmness and relaxation), and beta waves (associated with focus).
  • When there is an imbalance in the generation of any of these waves, our moods can be impacted negatively and we may notice increased impulsivity and feelings of depression and anxiety.

Our neurofeedback specialist utilizes electroencepahlography (EEG) in order to collect a sample of the brainwaves produced by your brain. This data is used to create a brain map, or a visual representation of the wave activity in your brain.

Your brain map is compared to other, sample brain maps in order for our specialist to determine where there are imbalances.

Recent research has indicated that there are commonalities among the brain wave activity and imbalances in those who suffer from substance use disorder.

This body of research has also suggested that implementing neurofeedback therapy can, over time, retrain the brainwave activity of the addict to reflect the brainwave activity of those who do not suffer from addiction.

Brain mapping and neurofeedback therapy are a cutting-edge tool in treatment of addiction and substance abuse which enables participants to begin to retrain their brains.

At Luxe, our clinical team endeavors to synthesize various therapies and treatment modalities in order to prepare you to navigate a substance-free life independently.
